BURKE LUBRICANTS CUSTOMER – MOBIL POLYREX SHC 005 SAVES £387,840 ANNUALLY COCA COLA HELLENIC’S BOTTLING PLANT IN LISBURN
Coca Cola Hellenic
Lisburn, Co Down
Northern Ireland
Background
Hellenic’s key machines for bottling Coca Cola and other leading soft drink brands have to work non-stop, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year in extreme operating conditions involving hot detergent machine wash-downs, high operating temperatures, and contamination.
Situation
Hellenic had tried a variety of competitor NSF H1 food industry greases in the past that had failed to provide good pumpability, water wash out resistance or the high temperature performance required.
Grease line blockages, and the essential machine hot wash-downs had a drastic effect on bearings, resulting in lubricant starvation. Bearing failures resulted in average of sixteen machine stoppages annually, with each episode averaging four hours.
Estimated machine costs per hour of breakdown are as follows:
Fitters’ Time - £60 per hour
Production losses - £6,000 per hour
Recommendations and Solutions
Burke Lubricants, was contacted by Coca Cola Hellenic engineers to find a suitable lubricant, Mobil SHC Polyrex 005 was proposed due to its:
NSF H1 certification – making it suitable for use in the beverage industry NLGI 00 classification – providing excellent pumpability, and preventing line blockages
Fully Synthetic grease – high temperature performance, long oil life
Excellent water wash-out resistance – grease retained in the bearings preventing lubricant starvation
Outcome
The versatility and product integrity of Mobil SHC Polyrex 005 enabled Coca Cola Hellenic to standardise a single grade for all their auto-lubricated systems, ensuring correct lubrication, and ultimate component protection preventing unplanned production line shut downs totalling £387,840 annually.
