BURKE LUBRICANTS CUSTOMER – MOBIL SHC CIBUS 150 SAVES £432,330 ANNUALLY AT THE COCA COLA HELLENIC BOTTLING PLANT IN LISBURN

Background

The Angelus Seamer line is a key machine at Hellenic’s state of the art bottling plant at Lisburn where Coca Cola and other brand leaders are mass produced. It is capable of sealing 300 million cans of Coca Cola a year with a production value of £210 million. It is essential that the lubricants used in this critical item of equipment are capable of lubricating and protecting the machine during practically non-stop production.  At the same time the lubricants must comply with the NSF H1 registration for use in food and beverage applications. It must also continue to lubricate and prevent corrosion during Coca Cola’s strict regime of frequent machine wash downs.

 

Situation

Coca Cola have a very strict no shut down policy between extended service intervals subsequently the Seamer line has to be kept running 24/7. This is primarily due to downtime being very costly at around £575,000 pounds per day in lost production. The previous mineral based lubricants used in the machine could not cope with the arduous operating conditions resulting in an estimated 36 hours of unplanned down time annually which involved taking the machine out of service for deep cleaning and removal of the oil/water emulsion build-up. Estimated machine costs per hour of breakdown are as follows:

 

• Fitters’ Time - £60 per hour
• Production losses - £23,950 per hour
• Annual cost - £864,360

 

Recommendations and Solutions

To ensure the best possible performance under such punishing circumstances and between extreme service intervals Mobil Synthetics were the only choice. Burke Lubricants recommended Mobil SHC Cibus 150 for the lubrication of the Seamer together which satisfies the NSF H1 requirements and has outstanding performance in the presence of water when maximum corrosion protection is required.

 

Outcome

Mobil SHC Cibus 150 unquestionably outperformed previous competitor grades costing up to 300% more. Crucially this resulted in an estimated 50% reduction in downtime and estimated saving £432,180 annually.
