Recently, automotive experts at the Mobil 1 technical research center subjected a 2007 Mercedes E350 equipped with a 3.5L, six-cylinder engine and seven-speed transmission to extensive endurance testing, spanning one million kilometers.

In phase one, the vehicle was run on a dynamometer – a treadmill-like machine for vehicles that simulates driving – for nearly 350,000 kilometers, with oil changes completed every 20,000 kilometers. To simulate everyday driving conditions, the average speed was maintained at slightly more than 110 kilometers per hour.

In phase two, spanning more than 650,000 kilometers, the vehicle was operated at higher speeds and under more demanding conditions, known as the Accelerated Autobahn Accumulation Cycle.

Overall, the vehicle accumulated one million kilometers and had 48 oil changes.

Along with visual inspections, the team conducted a series of performance tests and measurements throughout the entire testing cycle, including used oil analysis, oil consumption and emissions testing.
