Benefit
Upgrading three boats from conventional mineral oil to fully
synthetic Mobil Delvac 1™ ESP 5W-40 enabled AEP to:
• Cut its engine oil usage by an average of 80 percent
• Extend its oil drain intervals from 500-1,000 hours to over
5,000 hours
• Decrease its waste oil disposal by an average of 80 percent
• Reduce overall downtime
Situation
In the beginning of 2012, St. Louis-based AEP River Operations embarked on a strategy to reduce emissions while improving the performance and reliability of its fleet. To support the implementation of this strategy, AEP selected Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 to replace the conventional mineral oil in the boats’ main and generator engines. To monitor engine and oil conditions, AEP utilized ExxonMobil’s SignumSM Oil Analysis program.
Solution
Compared to conventional oils, Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 helps decrease oil consumption, extend oil drain intervals, reduce waste oil disposal, improve equipment reliability and lower overall operating and maintenance costs. As AEP increased oil drain intervals, oil samples were tested on a monthly basis. Results from these tests provided assurance that Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 was working as intended.
Impact
The change to Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 helped AEP River Operations reduce its environmental impact on U.S. inland waterways and its downtime, improving fleet performance and reliability and lowering costs. According to AEP River Operations, “We’ve been a leader in the river transportation industry for more than 40 years and are always looking for ways to work smarter and safer. Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5W-40 is one of the ways we’re doing this. Our results prove it.”
