Situation and Objectives

A shipping and logistics company based in the North of Sweden operating a fleet of Dock cranes in different sizes sought a solution to further extend oil drain intervals from 500 hours. This company is located close to the sea so weather conditions can affect the operating cranes. The company was approached by Mobil Authorized Distributor G.A.Lindberg and its reseller, who proposed a comparison trial with the company’s present choice of SAE 15W-40 engine oil and fully synthetic Mobil Delvac 1^™ LE 5W-30. The purpose of the trial was to demonstrate that Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 can help to increase oil drain intervals and that it offers excellent cold starting properties in winter temperatures of up to -30 degrees.

Recommendations and Solutions

Mobil Authorized Distributor G.A.Lindberg recommended Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 and the use of ExxonMobil’s proprietary Singum Oil analysis to monitor the performance of the oil as drain intervals were extended. Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 contains more highly refined base oils than those used in conventional mineral oils, offering superior protection and performance. Synthetic lubricants are engineered to reduce internal friction, which results in outstanding flow characteristics at low temperatures. As a result, components are lubricated more effectively, especially during a cold start-up where a significant amount of component wear can take place. Improved oxidation stability and thermal stability in Mobil Delvac 1 synthetic lubricants results in less viscosity increase with age and better deposit control, which leads to fewer oil changes and less downtime, with the potential for extended oil drain intervals - all of which can ultimately save time and money.

Results and Benefits

The test vehicle was a Sennebogen Crane with Deutz engine. Oil analysis was conducted every 500 hrs until 1500 hrs was reached. Result showed that the performance of Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 was maintained despite the extended oil drain intervals. The vehicle operating conditions and weather conditions were consistent throughout. Based on the results of the trial, Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 offers outstanding cold-start performance and extended service life of the engine and excellent equipment protection. In addition, the use of Mobil Delvac 1 LE 5W-30 could reduce waste oil by 91 litres per vehicle.
